THE NAUTILUS; 15 YEARS OF CGI WORK

AT THE AGE OF 9, I READ THE NOVEL BY JULES VERNE, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. I HAVE READ IT MANY TIMES SINCE, AND OF COURSE ALSO VIEWED THE DISNEY MOVIE OF THE SAME TITLE, PRODUCED JUST TWO YEARS AFTER I WAS BORN. THESE WORKS MADE A STRIKING IMPRESSION UPON MY DEVELOPING MIND, AND ALSO STRONGLY INFLUENCED MY TASTES IN READING, LEADING ME TO A LIFELONG LOVE AFFAIR WITH SCIENCE FICTION.

THE 1954 HARPER GOFF VERSION OF THE NAUTILUS COMMISSIONED BY DISNEY, ALTHOUGH A SENSATIONAL LOOKING MOVIE PROP, WITH FLAIR AND DRAMATIC STYLING, WAS A BIT OFF THE MARK WHEN IT CAME TO HAVING VERISIMILITUDE WITH VERNE'S DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FAMOUS BOAT.

THE GOFF/DISNEY NAUTILUS WAS TOO SHORT, TOO FAT IN THE MIDSECTION AND TOO TALL TO MATCH THE DIMENSIONS GIVEN BY VERNE. IT ALSO HAD THE DIVE LOCK, LAUNCH AND SALON IN THE WRONG LOCATIONS, AND THE LIBRARY AND DINING COMPARTMENTS WERE LEFT OUT ENTIRELY. THE SALON WINDOWS WERE PROTECTED BY IRISING SHUTTERS, WHERE VERNE CLEARLY STATED THAT THE WINDOWS AND SHUTTERS OF THE NAUTILUS WERE RECTANGULAR OR OBLONG, NOT ROUND, AND HAD SHUTTERS THAT SLID DOWNWARDS.

THE PROPULSION SECTION'S VOLUME WAS WOEFULLY INADEQUATE TO HOUSE ANY KIND OF 19TH CENTURY ENGINE CAPABLE OF MOVING THE BOAT THROUGH THE WATER AT THE SPEEDS REFERENCED IN THE NOVEL.

IN 1999 I PURCHASED MY FIRST DESKTOP COMPUTER, ALONG WITH A 3-D MODELING PROGRAM CALLED 'BRYCE-4', AND BEFORE LONG, FIRED BY A DESIRE TO 'CORRECT THE RECORD', I HAD EMBARKED ON AN EFFORT TO GRAPHICALLY MODEL 'THE TRUE' NAUTILUS, GUIDED OF COURSE BY THE DESCRIPTIONS GIVEN IN VERNE'S NOVEL,
AND, ADMITTEDLY, ALONG WITH A LITTLE CREATIVE LICENSE OF MY OWN. ( USUALLY ONLY RE. THE BITS LEFT UP TO THE READERS' IMAGINATION )

THIS CREATIVE JOURNEY CONSUMED MUCH OF MY SPARE TIME FOR 15 YEARS, THROUGH 4 EVOLVING DESIGN ITERATIONS, 3 MODELING SOFTWARE UPGRADES TO 'BRYCE-7-PRO', AND THE ADDITIONS OF 3-D STUDIO MAX AND PHOTOSHOP EDITING SOFTWARE.

I HAVE DECIDED TO SHARE SOME OF THIS MATERIAL ON MY WEBSITE, FOR ALL THOSE WHO ARE AS FASCINATED WITH THINGS VERNIAN AS AM I.

I HAVE PUBLISHED A ILLUSTRATED COMMENTARY ON THE NAUTILUS AT AMAZON,
